Nike Daydreams with Rafael Nadal

@nike rolled out a new IGTV series called Daydreams, humanizing elite athletes by telling stories of how they relax outside of their sport.

Nike needed an overarching design aesthetic and animations to be used for all the future Daydreams shows. I came in post-production to concept and design the animations, handwritten font and visual feel. I was uniquely qualified for this task as I have experience with art direction, but also love to illustrate and animate. Rafael Nadal’s episode is the first installment in the Daydreams series.

A few early ideas during the concepting phase. I wanted the feeling of a good daydream—playful, light, and fuzzy—to come through in the design.

Once we landed on a design, I storyboarded the animation.

Color was obviously important, but a little tricky due to visibility issues.

Once it was nailed down, all that was left to do make the damn thing.

The opening one went so well we decided to add an ending animation for the IG story “swipe up.”

To complete the daydream-y feel, I decided to make the captions handwritten.

And bam, here’s the final product:

I did all this in about two days, and my hand was so stiff from drawing so many frames I couldn’t hold my fork while eating spaghetti the next day lol
